Types of Temperament
It goes without saying that each person is unique. Since their early childhood young children are very different from each other. They think, feel and act in their own way, which is different from everyone around them. There are some reasons for that phenomenon. These can be grouped into genetic and environmental ones. However, behaviour is often influenced by a person’s temperament.
The classification was developed by a Greek physician Hippocrates and it dates back over 2400 years. Hippocrates created the theory for medical purposes. The idea is as old as time but it still works really well.
There are four types of temperament according to the classification. They are the choleric, sanguine, melancholic and phlegmatic temperaments.
The most sociable personalities are the sanguine people. They are always fun to be around. They are easy going and talkative which makes it easy for them to make new friends. The sanguine people are flexible and become good leaders. However, as they experience a wide range of emotions and adore excitement, they can be impulsive.
Another extroverted temperament is choleric. These people are also sociable but in a more leadership-oriented sense. They are not very sensitive. If you start debating with them, make sure you support your point of view with facts as choleric people are very logical. Juggling with facts is as easy for them as pie. They set goals and always achieve them. They might be workaholics and they are very energetic. Being determined they don’t usually change their goals or attitude.
Melancholic people are more introverted. They think carefully before they act. It can take them quite long to find the best solution. Caution is their second self. They are not risky at all. They easily get hurt. Melancholic personalities lack determination and confidence.
The phlegmatic personalities are introverted, they are the ones valuing peace, comfort and harmony. Leadership doesn't attract them. If you seek support, they will give it to you.
You can find some features of different temperaments in one person, but one of the types usually prevails. There are lots of tests helping you to check which temperament you have. You can find them online or ask for one from a psychologist.
